Company history

Since 2001, Gate Television Productions Ltd. has established itself as a leading company for the production of international event television.

Our focus is on English language productions with international themes, prime time suitability and high production values which can be interpreted worldwide.

From the beginning, GATE has been able to build on many years of cooperation with Dr Herbert Kloiber's Tele München Gruppe (TMG) as a financially sound production partner for the realisation of film projects.

GATE Television Productions Ltd. was established in London in 2003 to expedite the international orientation of the production company. Since then Gate Television Productions Ltd. has concentrated on English language television and cinema productions.

We are regularly able to acquire internationally-known actors for new projects. GATE has worked with Peter O'Toole, Jacqueline Bisset, Michael York, Geraldine Chaplin, Sir Peter Ustinov, Vanessa Redgrave, Maximilian Schell, Iain Glen, Rutger Hauer, Franco Nero, Sebastian Koch, Tim Roth, Neve Campbell, William Hurt, Ethan Hawke, Gillian Anderson and Donald Sutherland among others.

GATE's successes include English language film versions of bestseller novels by Rosamunde Pilcher which are broadcast in Germany on the ZDF channel. These television event movies, filmed on location in Scotland and England, will also be internationally interpreted via our close partnership with TMG.

In 2007, GATE produced the cinema film »Ein fliehendes Pferd« (A Runaway Horse) adapted from the novella by Martin Walser, featuring Katja Riemann, Petra Schmidt-Schaller, Ulrich Noethen, Ulrich Tukur and directed by Rainer Kaufmann. Petra Schmidt-Schaller was honoured with the Bavarian Film Award as the best young actor for her portrayal of Helene. »A Runaway Horse« was ranked third in the Arthouse Charts during its cinema launch in Germany.

In 2008, GATE produced the all-star cast television two-part series »Der Seewolf« (Sea Wolf), which was largely filmed off the coast of Canada on a sailing ship to ensure high standards of realism. In addition to TMG, America's RHI Entertainment was a co-production partner. ZDF was the German broadcast partner for this mini-series. Sebastian Koch was nominated for the International Emmy Award for his role as Captain Wolf Larsen.

GATE continued its success story with the remake of the classic »Moby Dick« by Herman Melville, with the same team that had collaborated on »Sea Wolf«. Scenes were filmed in Lunenburg (Nova Scotia) and Malta. »Moby Dick« had its US premiere in August 2011 on the Starz/Encore cable channel, where it enjoyed increases of 140% above the channel's prime time average. RTL was the German television partner for the project.
